October BO Collection Day 3: Will Varun Dhawan's Film Pass The Monday Test?

Trade experts had predicted that Varun Dhawan – Banita Sandhu’s film October, directed by Shoojit Sircar, will earn around Rs 25 crore in the first weekend. Well, the film didn’t hit that mark but has raked in Rs 20.25 crore in the first weekend. While it started slow on Friday, the business picked up on Saturday and further on Sunday. However, it will be crucial to see how the film performs over the weekdays and specially on Monday, which tends to be a low earning day since it is first day of the work week.

Considering that the film is made on a budget of Rs 30 – 40 crore and is not an out and out commercial film, the earnings are not bad at all. However, it will have to show a consistent growth over the weekday to stay in buzz over the second weekend as well and attract footfalls in the theatres. Talking about the film’s earnings, trade analyst and senior film critic Taran Adarsh said, “#October witnessed ample growth on Sat and Sun, after a slow start on Fri morning/noon… While the trending is healthy, it’s all about maintaining the pace on weekdays now… Fri 5.04 cr, Sat 7.47 cr, Sun 7.74 cr. Total: ₹ 20.25 cr. India biz. (sic).”

Interestingly, while the film is being called one of Varun Dhawan’s best when it comes it his performance, October itself has an extremely mixed word of mouth which may not act in its favor. While critics reviews have most been favourable, Varun’s fans, who expect a masala film ala Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya and Judwaa 2 from him, have been left unimpressed and disappointed with his intense performance. But we don’t think this will bother the actor since he has maintained right from day one that October is a film close to his heart and this is the first time ever in his career in Bollywood that he is not thinking about the BO numbers. We hear he also slashed his fee for the film to keep the budget in control. Well then, whatever the BO figures, Varun’s act has got a thumbs up and it is definitely time for him to celebrate.
